While a clean and moisturized face is the best canvas for a flawless makeup application, it’s important to plan for the unexpected and be equipped for quick and effective touch ups. After all, emotional speeches, snack breaks or even sudden weather changes can all impact even the most well-prepped face. When it comes to choosing wedding day products, Kelli Anne Sewell, celebrity makeup artist and founder of Makeup by Kelli Anne, says that it’s important not to try anything new too close to the wedding. “You want to avoid introducing new beauty products at least a month or two before the big day so as to not irritate the skin,” says Sewell.
Victory loves preparation
While a consistent skincare routine can help achieve a flawless look, priming the skin is just as important to create a solid base that will require less touch-ups. “For any long-lasting makeup look, you want to make sure skin is prepped before application,” says Sewell. “I’d also recommend that for any areas where you get shiny, to use a mattifying primer.”
Practice makes perfect
To get a better feel for which wedding day products couples should keep on hand and how many touch ups they will require, Sewell recommends trying out the makeup look in advance. “I always recommend brides do a trial run with their makeup artist, or themselves if they are doing their own wedding makeup, at least six months before the big day,” says Sewell. “During that trial, you’ll be able to see how the makeup wears. If you find yourself oily after a few hours, tweak your skin prep.” To control shine, Sewell suggests using a blurring stick and priming the skin with a water-based moisturizer. She also recommends setting the areas with a long-lasting powder and waterproof setting spray (both of which can be kept on hand) to help lock everything in.
All in the layers
In terms of techniques for touch ups, Sewell recommends makeup wedding day products that allow for layering. “You want to pick formulas that allow you to build in light layers,” she says, and suggests investing in a good quality foundation and powder, long wear lip liner formula and waterproof mascara. “Layering sheer layers of creams or liquids and sheer powders and setting them with a great waterproof setting spray is the best way to ensure your makeup lasts all night.”
